In 2022, Le Grand Cru with Compagnie Walô from Benin were given the opportunity to conduct a “Refresher Course” to repeat previously trained skills and exchange new skills and methodologies. For Walo, it was important to be able to present new material – 4 short choreographies – in order to grow as an organization. The training was designed primarily for creators with management and composition/dramaturgy training to grow both organizationally and artistically. In addition, for a larger group, there were daily technique classes in contemporary dance styles and a reconnect module with an Afro-Cuban trainer to explore the connection between ancient traditions and the diaspora. Finally, at the end of the training in Benin, an alumni peer review week was paired with alumni leaders from Mali, Benin, Senegal and Burundi.
